Social Evening - Wortley Hall - Friday 5th June

The choir enjoyed a social evening with our visitors Côr Meibion Dwyfor at Wortley Hall.

The standard of entertainment was excellent and set the mood for a highly enjoyable concert next day at the Paramount in Penistone.

Brush up your Welsh
We're all looking forward to June 6th when Côr Meibion Dwyfor come to visit Penistone.  At the concert in the Paramount we will be joining with them for a few Welsh favourites, Myfanwy , Gwahoddiad and the Welsh Anthem.  If you would like some re-assurance of your pronunciation click on the song name above and you'll hear a real Welsh person singing it and find links to many other great Welsh songs.

You might also like to try this link to a performance by a male voice choir and has phonetic words appearing in time with the music.  Choir singing Welsh Anthem.

Celebrity Concert 2009
We opened our 2009 concert season in style on March 18th with the Annual celebrity concert at the Penistone Paramount.  This year’s guests were the Sellers International Youth Band.

The choir presented some new material such as Signore delle Cime (Lord of the Peaks), the song of mountaineers in the Italian Alps on the death of a climbing friend.  They revived some old favourites, Schubert’s Die Nacht and American Trilogy.  Some of the pieces will also feature in the Festival of Brass and Voices at the Royal Albert Hall in November.

Sellers Youth Band played some wonderful and challenging pieces starting with Sousa’s Semper Fidelis and ending with the William Tell Overture.  Their talented soloists played with confidence and were a great credit to the band.  It was a round full rich sound from such young players, many of whom play in national bands and orchestras.

Barbara Marshall, compère for the evening, provided continuity, glamour and humour in a role she has performed for several years.

Christmas Concert 2008
A capacity audience enjoyed our annual carol concert with Penistone Ladies in St. John’s Church, Penistone.  This year we were also joined by the Springvale Children’s choir, soloist Rhiyanydd Helen Booth and a trio formed specially for the night consisting of Yvonne Woffenden, the ladies' choir accompanist, and two students from Sheffield Music Academy.

As usual the proceeds were donated to charities.  We were able to present £800 each to the West Yorkshire Forget Me Not Trust and the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths.

The Forget Me Not Trust is building a centre to provide care for children with life-limiting conditions, and the Foundation for the Study of Infant Deaths support families who have suffered from cot death and fund research into its prevention.

Two donations were also given to the church restoration appeal, one from the choirs and another from the Penistone Competitive Music Festival who celebrated their 40th season this year.

Lasting Partnership
At the choir practice on Monday 29th September Sue Christie celebrated 15 years of being the choir's Musical Director.  We all recognise that Sue is the choir's greatest asset and we're very lucky to have her (but we must be doing something right to have held on to her for so long!)
Thanks Sue, here's to the next 15 years.

Competition Success
At the Penistone Competitive Music Festival on September 27th, MGMVC won both of the classes they entered and were awarded a Distinction in each.

Welsh trip
The choir and many supporters enjoyed a wonderful trip to Wales as guests of Cor Meibion Dwyfor. Click here to see a few photos.

The concert in Porthmadog was very well received, especially when the two choirs joined together and sang in Welsh.  This was matched by the socials in the hotels where the singing went on into the early hours.

Caernarfon Castle provided a magnificent setting for the second concert with the stone walls capturing the sound and taking it up to visitors even in the highest turrets.

The Snowdonian scenery was stunning and the weather was marvellous.  On the trip to Portmeirion you could have believed we really were in Italy.

Once again we must all thank Janet and Terry Cater for organising a terrific trip.

AGM
The 2008 Annual General Meeting was held on Thursday 4th September.  A summary follows, click on the link for more details.

Terry Cater has stepped down after three years as chairman.  He was thanked for all his tireless efforts, many of which may have gone unnoticed by many, but which have been crucial to the success and smooth running of the choir.  A special thank you was also sent to Terry's wife Janet for the huge amount of time and effort she has put in to creating programmes, posters, newsletters and organising trips and social events.  John Hind was elected as the new chairman with Steve Dixon as deputy.

A presentation was made to Melvyn Dyson in recognition of his fantastic 25 year stint as secretary of the choir.

Alan Booth reported that the choir's finances were in very good shape and that subscriptions could be held to last year's level.

Sue Christie thanked the choir for their hard work and commitment.  She recognised that the great friendship and sense of fun we have at practices and at social events is part of the choir's strength.
