Choir record Yorkshire Anthem
On June 20th the choir travelled to Leeds to record the finale to the Yorkshire Symphony. It was a glorious summer day and we practiced out in the car park before the actual recording in a small, hot, air-tight studio. Composer Benjamin Till was delighted with the quality of the singing and in particular congratulated us on having such a jewel of a musical director.
We're now looking forward to July 11th when the filming takes place in Sheffield and at the Blacksmiths Arms in Millhouse Green where the choir was born. Let's hope the weather then is as fine as it was today.
A Symphony for Yorkshire
Musicians have been recruited from across the county and a male voice choir is needed to sing the specially written anthem.
The premiere of A Symphony for Yorkshire will be aired on BBC Look North and on the BBC local radio stations Sheffield, York, Leeds and Humberside on Yorkshire Day, August 1st 2010.
On June 20th, the choir will travel to the BBC studios in Leeds for the recording of the soundtrack of the symphony. On July 11th, a camera crew will visit Millhouse Green to film us out and about in the area singing the anthem.
Sponsorship
Chris Blantern, Director of Hi-Point Scaffolding has agreed to sponsor the choir. Chris has accepted our offer of the post of Vice President. Hi-Point will appear on our stationery, and this website, and we hope this arrangement will continue to flourish.
Roy Watmough
The choir was saddened by the loss of Roy Watmough from the baritone section.
Roy died in the Royal Hallamshire Hospital after a short illness.
He leaves a daughter, two granddaughters and a great-granddaughter.
Choir members attended his funeral service at Green Moor Chapel and Grenoside crematorium.
Christmas Concert 2009
The annual Christmas Concert with Penistone Ladies was a wonderful evening and again a sellout performance. This year's talented young guest performers were flautist Hannah Smalley and the Holmfirth Boys Choir.
Thanks to the ticket sales and the generosity of the sponsors, £1500 was raised for the
Kids Scanner Appeal at Sheffield Children's Hospital and £300 was donated to the Penistone St. John's Church building fund.
Melanie's Baby
Melanie had a bouncing baby boy on 7th October 2009.
Noah Christopher weighed in at a very substantial 10lb 10oz, a potential Russian Bass!
Congratulations Melanie. We're all looking forward to seeing you back at practices in a few weeks time.

Celebrity Concert 2009We opened our 2009 concert season in style on March 18th with the Annual celebrity concert at the Penistone Paramount. This year’s guests were the Sellers International Youth Band.
The choir presented some new material such as Signore delle Cime (Lord of the Peaks), the song of mountaineers in the Italian Alps on the death of a climbing friend. They revived some old favourites, Schubert’s Die Nacht and American Trilogy. Some of the pieces will also feature in the Festival of Brass and Voices at the Royal Albert Hall in November.
Sellers Youth Band played some wonderful and challenging pieces starting with Sousa’s Semper Fidelis and ending with the William Tell Overture. Their talented soloists played with confidence and were a great credit to the band. It was a round full rich sound from such young players, many of whom play in national bands and orchestras.
Barbara Marshall, compère for the evening, provided continuity, glamour and humour in a role she has performed for several years.
